Penelakut Island Learning Centre is located on Penelakut Island off the shore of Chemainus B.C. The school has an average student enrolment of 40 students and delivers the current BC Curriculum to its grade 9-12 students. Penelakut Island Learning Centre also offers an adult program with integration of employment and training services to community members. We offer a 4-day work week, with operation Monday to Thursday 7:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. We match local school district salary and provide a generous benefits package after a 3-month probationary period. The Tribe also offers water taxi transportation for staff members.
Position Description
The teacher will provide instruction, supervision, and education services to our students, supporting extracurricular activities as required. The teacher will provide instruction in math, science, english first peoples, and elective courses that are required to reach a Dogwood/Adult Dogwood diploma. The Penelakut Island Learner Centre offers small class sizes and integrates First Nations language and culture into the programming. The successful candidate will be a creative self-starter who thrives in having a substantial amount of professional autonomy. They will be required to have a considerable amount of flexibility around course preparations.
RESPONSIBILITIES, QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE:
Follow the B.C. Curriculum to teach Math, Science, English First Peoples, and elective courses;
Lesson planning and activity preparation;
Ability to work with students with diverse needs;
Facilitate students’ progress towards graduation requirements with innovative and unconventional learning opportunities, prioritizing land-based learning and integration of Penelakut Tribe teachings;
Create an engaging and encouraging environment for students;
Implement effective classroom management strategies;
Prepare student progress reports and final grades;
Provide attendance reports, participate in initiatives to improve attendance;
Assessment and exam oversight, providing regular form and informal assessments and feedback;
Develop relationships with staff, students, partners, community members and families;
Attend regular and special staff meetings as called by the Principal or Education Director;
Submit Ministry of Education approved course outline to the Principal by the specified date;
Plan and coordinate various school-related events (graduation);
Maintain confidentiality of students and students’ records;
Promote and encourage community involvement in the school;
Provide guidance, support and delegation to the Education Assistant, Cook, Administrative Secretary and Janitor;
Plan and support students on school field trips;
Other duties specific to the position.
Bachelor of Education degree and a member of the BC Teacher Regulation Branch;
Experience working in First Nations Schools would be an asset;
Clear criminal record check.
